Freeheld is based on the true story of police officer Laurel Hester of Ocean County, New Jersey. Though the film is set in New Jersey, it was filmed in New York and while filming, The Salesian High School in New Rochelle, refused a scene to be shot there due to the movies dialogue and their religious views on homosexuality. During filming, Ellen Page came OUT.
