Celebrating Lesbian Visibility Week? It's the 2020s - should we bother celebrating Lesbian Visibility Week? Hell YEH!!!

What is Lesbian Visibility Week? Lesbian Visibility Week is a celebration of how far women's LGBTQ+ rights and equality have come, while paying homage to lesbians who have fought for our rights. Lesbian Visibility Week / Day also reminds us, that we should all still strive for equality regardless of our sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality and religion. Lesbian Visibility Week encompasses Lesbian Visibility Day, which is always on April 26th.

Why is Lesbian Visibility Week Important? ...

Lesbian Visibility Week Is Important Because: across the world, lesbians / LGBTQ+ women are still experiencing inequality, hate crimes and in some countries sexual activity between females is still illegal. Out of 195 countries in the world circa 41 countries still criminalise sexual activity between females - Source: humandignitytrust.org.



Moreover, in 2022 only 32 countries legally permit same-sex marriage - Source: hrc.org (The Human Rights Campaign).



Though in seemingly more liberal uK, where seemingly our LGBTQ+ community experiences more freedom than other countries, Hate Crimes on the basis of sexual orientation are up by 112% in the last five years - Source: Stonewall.org.uk. Lesbian Visibility Week is a great opportunity to show solidarity with lesbians (and the LGBTQ+ community) in our own country and in less fortunate countries.

When is Lesbian Visibility Week? In the UK, Lesbian Visibility Day, the 26 April, has been celebrated since 2008 to toast to and commemorate the achievements of lesbians. It was a take-up from the American West Hollywood, Lesbian Visibility Week which has been held since 1990. Bravo to Diva Magazine who extended it in 2021, in the UK, to Lesbian Visibility Week which is for all LGBTQ+ women. Lesbian Visibility Week is now celebrated internationally on the last week of April e.g. Mon, 22 April – Sun, 28 April 2024.

* Lesbians: total respect - it's for YOU to decide how much you wish to "fly the lesbian flag" / get involved, OUT in public. Bravo, to those who do courageously celebrate it in public and support others. FYI it's a v fab way to make new friends and perhaps find ... L.O.V.E ;)
* Friends & family: do please, support your OUT lezza!
* Employers: you can do so much e.g. ​​ensure that your employees know that you are an inclusive company and support LGBTQ+ employees, ensure that you have a strong anti-discrimination policy (for ALL) ... and acknowledge/celebrate key dates important to your employees.
